Ivan Andreevich Krylov - one of the famous poets in the Russian literature wrote fables. He lived at the end of 18 centuries. This poet distinguished by writing fables in which it derided greed, rage, meanness and other evils. Usually he wrote fables about animals and insects, comparing their images to images of people. He wrote his works poetically. I’d like you appreciate one of his small works which I have translated into English.
«Swan, Pike and Crawfish»
When partners can’t agree
Their dealings come to naught
And trouble is their labor’s only fruit.
Once Crawfish, Swan and Pike
Set out to pull a loaded cart,
And all together settled in the traces;
They pulled with all their might, but still the cart refused to budge!
The load it seemed was not too much for them:
Yet Crawfish scrambled backwards,
Swan strained up skywards, Pike pulled toward the sea.
Who’s guilty here and who is right is
not for us to say - But anyway the cart’s still there today.
In this work the poet wished to show that if in a command everyone does as he wishes the command cannot achieve any result. Usually in books he used animals possessing the qualities that could also describe a person’s character. For example a cunny fox, the malicious wolf, a a strong and mighty lion and a scared sheep. There are a lot of animals, but all of them correspond to this or that type of human evil. The most interesting is that all this port wrote many years ago still happens in our life today. And no time will ever change the mankind. And the lie, meanness, envy, arrogance also will be peculiar to it. I have read many books by Krylov. Those who love poetry can find translated English fables by Krylov in Internet. I would advise to read the Wolf on a kennel, the Raven and the Fox, Sheep and Dogs and the Lion and the Mosquito.
